Mathematics for Industry Network (MI-NET)

Project no.: TD1409
Project website: https://mi-network.org/

Project description:

The network of the project Mathematics in Industry https://mi-network.org/ supported the partnership of mathematicians from more than 30 countries and business (industry). This was carried out through three main activities: European Study Groups with Industry (ESGI), industrial workshops, simulation weeks for students and short scientific missions (STSM). ESGI example in 2017 MGMF in Lithuania started conducting mathematics and business workshops https://mathworkshop.ktu.edu/. For these workshops, companies submit mathematical problems, research group participants work individually on each problem presented, and at the end of the week, they present the results of their work to industry representatives. Since 2017, about 20 small, medium and large companies have already participated in the mathematics and business workshops. Judging by the feedback, the workshop is very useful for business enterprises and encourages them to be more interested in R&D services provided by scientific institutions. In order to introduce students (of all levels) to some standard methods of industrial mathematics, the idea of a mathematical modeling week was implemented. Here, students work on carefully prepared real-world problems, and student groups are advised by experienced scientists who have successfully collaborated with industry. An event of this type will take place in Lithuania in 2025.

COST actions

Project results:

In total, MI-Net supported 21 ESGIs, involving 80 companies from all over Europe (90% SMEs). In addition, 12 simulation weeks, 23 industry workshops and 51 STSMs were funded. 3000 participants from 46 countries took part in MI-Net funded events.
By exploiting innovative concepts in industrial and applied mathematics, MI-Net has given European industry a competitive advantage. Academic members of MI-Net benefit from the extensive and stable ECMI network (established as far back as 1987) and many highly relevant and cutting-edge research methods related to industry issues.
Funds were raised from various public and business sources to carry out the aforementioned activities in Lithuania. In 2018, 10,000 euros were received from the ECMI organization, in 2019 3380 eur was raised from EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies).
